「HELLO! Theater」「HELLO! MUSEUM」「HELLO! MOVIE」

Theater」「HELLO!

Theater」「HELLO! MUSEUM」「HELLO!

Evixar Develops Stage Caption Synchronization Technology
Combining Acoustic Watermarking, Feature Matching,
and Speech Recognition

Captions that keep pace with the shifting tempo and timing of live performance —
to be rolled out on HELLO! Theater, HELLO! MUSEUM, and HELLO! MOVIE

Evixar Inc. (Tokyo, Chuo-ku; President & CEO: Atsushi Andrew Takigawa) has developed a new caption synchronization technology for stage and theater captioning services. It adds speech recognition, which automatically recognizes actors’ lines, to Evixar’s acoustic watermarking and acoustic feature matching technologies. The technology will be rolled out in stages on HELLO! Theater and HELLO! MUSEUM, provided by Evixar, and on HELLO! MOVIE, provided by its subsidiary HELLO! MOVIE Inc.

Diagram of the new technology: acoustic watermarks identify the scene, feature matching aligns captions when a show opens with live music, and speech recognition follows dialogue, automatically correcting caption timing on smartphones and smart glasses

Background

In live theater, the tempo and the pauses between lines change from one performance to the next, even for the same production, and the pace of live music and singing differs every time. Since 2018, Evixar has provided captioning services for large-scale musical productions and other performances, embedding inaudible acoustic watermarks in the stage audio and using them to identify the current position in the performance and display captions. Because acoustic watermarks are embedded in pre-produced sound effects and background music, they cannot be placed in live music and singing, or in dialogue-only scenes without background music. Keeping captions on time in these passages, and in scenes that vary widely between performances, has required careful manual operation.

How It Works

The technology combines three techniques, each with a different role.

1
Acoustic watermarkingreliably identifies which scene is being performed, from signals embedded in the stage audio.
2
Feature matchingfocusing on features such as pitch, it matches the sound in the venue against pre-registered audio (such as rehearsal recordings). Robust to differences in volume, timbre, and room acoustics, it is used to align the starting point of captions even when a show opens with live music.
3
Speech recognitionautomatically transcribes actors’ lines during the performance and matches them against the script to identify which line is being spoken, advancing captions in step with the actors’ delivery even in scenes without background music.

By combining the three, the scene is reliably identified by acoustic watermarking, captions are aligned at the opening by feature matching, and variations in tempo and timing in dialogue are followed by speech recognition — so captions appear at natural timing on audience members’ smartphones and smart glasses, even in live performance.

Key Features

1
Captions can be aligned even when a show opens with live music, and in dialogue-only scenes without background music
2
Automatically adapts to changes in tempo and timing between performances, reducing the burden of manual caption cueing
3
Can be introduced while keeping existing acoustic watermarking equipment and workflows
4
With this technology, captions shown to the audience remain the pre-prepared, reviewed captions (including translated captions); speech recognition is used for timing, and its output is not displayed as-is

Patents

Evixar holds patents in Japan, the United States, China, South Korea, and Hong Kong on technology that detects “synchronization points” in the sound of a live performance and corrects the deviation from the planned timing to play back captions and other content. Under these patents, caption display timing can be set independently of where the synchronization points are, and caption start times can be corrected according to the detected deviation even when the tempo of the performance changes.

In Japan, Evixar has also obtained rights covering detection of synchronization points not only from watermarks embedded in the sound but also from features extracted from the sound. The new technology puts these two patented detection methods — acoustic watermarking and sound features — into practical use for live stage captioning, and adds speech recognition.

Looking Ahead

Evixar will roll out the technology in stages on HELLO! Theater, HELLO! MUSEUM, and HELLO! MOVIE, expanding captioning and guide services for musicals, plays, concerts, and other performances with live music or a high degree of spontaneity.
